PHILLIP CHARLESWORTH
LEADERSHIP & RESILIENCE AWARD
A 16-Week Outdoor Development Programme
for Young People (Aged 11–16) 25th June 2026
Building Confidence, Resilience and Leadership Through Outdoor Adventure
The Philip Charlesworth Award is a free 16-week outdoor development programme for young people in Years 7–11 living in the Penistone area, delivered by CMADE Outdoors.
Based at our working farm and outdoor learning site, the programme combines practical outdoor activities with teamwork, leadership, and personal development. Participants take part in activities including archery, air rifle shooting, axe throwing, shelter building, fire lighting, navigation, first aid, outdoor cooking, camping skills, and team challenges, while building confidence, resilience, and practical life skills.
The programme is fully instructor-led and designed to help young people develop confidence, responsibility, teamwork, and independence through hands-on outdoor experiences. The programme finishes with an expedition, celebration, and awards to recognise achievements.
Fully funded and free to attend for secondary school-aged young people living in the Penistone area.

A Journey of Development
The Award is built around four stages, each designed to support personal growth and increasing responsibility.
Discover
Participants begin by building friendships, developing teamwork skills and becoming familiar with the outdoor environment. Through practical challenges and hands-on learning, they gain confidence while learning how to work together and support one another.
Develop
As the programme progresses, participants are introduced to a wider range of outdoor skills and problem-solving challenges. They learn to think independently, communicate effectively and take greater responsibility for their own learning and development.
Lead
Young people are encouraged to take ownership of activities, contribute to planning and decision-making, and demonstrate leadership within their group. This stage focuses on responsibility, initiative and developing the confidence to support others.
Achieve
The programme culminates in a significant outdoor challenge where participants apply the skills, knowledge and resilience they have developed throughout the Award. Working together, they demonstrate the confidence and capability they have built over the previous weeks.

Residential Expedition & Celebration...

The programme culminates in an overnight outdoor expedition, where participants put all their skills—survival, navigation, teamwork, and leadership—into practice in a real-world setting.
Each group will plan and design their own expedition, including route, activities, and challenges, giving them full ownership of a demanding and exciting adventure. Some teams may also take part in fundraising elements, adding purpose and extra challenge to their journey.
The expedition is followed by a celebration meal and awards event, where families, carers, and community partners come together to recognise the determination, growth, and achievements of every young person.
A Safe and Supported Environment...
All sessions are delivered by experienced CMADE Outdoors staff.
Activities are fully risk-assessed, with appropriate staff-to-participant ratios maintained at all times.
Young people are supported throughout in a structured, consistent, and positive environment where they can build trust, develop skills, and grow in confidence.
